Why Your Mix Doesn't Glue (And Why More Compression Won't Help)
Quick answer: Your mix sounds like a stack of separate tracks because nothing is making them share a common dynamic behaviour. "Glue" is not a metaphor. It's a measurable phenomenon where one gain-reduction element responds to the sum of the material, so a loud snare momentarily ducks the guitars, and the whole arrangement starts breathing as a single organism. Vari-mu tube compression does this better than any other topology, because its ratio increases with input level and its knee is inherently soft. And no, adding another 2 dB of VCA compression will not get you there.
Topology is destiny
Every compressor reduces gain. How it decides to reduce gain determines what it sounds like.

Vari-mu (variable-mu) uses the tube itself as the gain element. Push more signal in, the tube's amplification factor drops. There's no separate detector circuit imposing a decision on the audio. The compression is the tube.
That's why it never sounds like something is being clamped. It sounds like the record is leaning in.
The COMP.TWO: all tube, no transistors, no compromise
The Rockruepel COMP.TWO is a faithful emulation of the German-built hardware unit by Rockruepel (Rock-bully, if you want the translation). It is an all-tube vari-mu design. There are no transistor stages anywhere in the signal path.
Oliver Gregor has been building machines with a soldering iron since kindergarten. His tenure as a tech at Skyline Studios in Düsseldorf fused his love of music and electrical engineering into a twenty-year pursuit: elevate the vari-mu design to meet a modern workflow and 21st-century sonics.
His conclusion was that a modern tube compressor had to be faster, have higher headroom, and offer a far more extensive feature set than anything on the market. The COMP.TWO is the result: the logical evolution of the COMP ONE, refined across two decades of development, testing and user feedback.
What "no limitations of a monolithic vari-mu" actually means
Classic vari-mu units have a signature and a straitjacket. They're slow. Their side chains are primitive. They compress the way they compress, and you adapt.
The COMP.TWO's side chain was rebuilt from first principles. It can be as fast as an 1176 or as slow as a Fairchild, as clean or as filthy as you need, while keeping the texture and tone of a classic tube compressor throughout.
A compressor is only as useful as its side chain is smart. This one includes a high-pass filter on the sidechain, so kick drum energy stops triggering full-band gain reduction and your low end stops pumping the top of your mix. It's the single most important control on any bus compressor, and vintage units almost never had it.
AMP ONLY: the mode that made Fab Dupont ask for it
The appeal of a great compressor is as much the inherent sound of the box as its ability to compress.
The COMP.TWO uses the same class of output tubes as the old Altec and RS124 compressors, feeding beautifully-voiced Sowter transformers in the output stage. That signal path colors everything that passes through it (harmonically, dynamically, spatially) before a single decibel of gain reduction occurs.

Seeing compression, finally
Compression is famously hard to perceive. Two dB of gain reduction on a mix bus is simultaneously the most important thing happening and completely invisible.
The COMP.TWO's Visualizer overlays input, output and gain reduction on a single time axis. You can see the release curve resolving between snare hits. You can see the sidechain HP stopping the kick from grabbing the whole mix. You can gain-match precisely instead of approximately.
Alongside it: both VU meters of the original hardware, faithfully recreated. Because sometimes you want to read a number, and sometimes you want to watch a needle.
A starting point for mix bus glue
- Insert on the mix bus. Stereo mode.
- Attack: slow-ish. Release: fast enough that the needle returns to rest between snare hits. Let the tempo tell you.
- Threshold: aim for 1.5 to 3 dB of gain reduction on the loudest section. Not 6. Not 10.
- Engage Sidechain HP around 80–120 Hz. Listen to the low end stop pumping.
- Use In/Out link to compare at matched level. If the compressed version isn't obviously better, you've done too much.
- Try AMP ONLY with the compressor bypassed. Decide how much of the improvement was actually the tubes.
That last step is the one that will change how you think about compression.
FAQ
What does "glue" actually mean in mixing? A single dynamics processor acting on the summed mix, so that transients in one element momentarily affect all the others. This shared response is what makes separate tracks feel like one performance rather than a stack.
How much gain reduction should a mix bus compressor do? Typically 1–3 dB on the loudest passages. Bus compression is about relationship, not level control. If you need more, fix the balance upstream.
Why is vari-mu better for the mix bus than VCA? Vari-mu has an inherently soft knee and a ratio that increases with input level, so it engages gradually and never sounds like a hard clamp. VCA is faster and more precise: better for control, worse for cohesion. Neither is "correct."
What is AMP ONLY mode for? Running audio through the modelled tubes and Sowter transformers with the compression circuit bypassed. Pure harmonic and transformer coloration, zero gain reduction. Excellent on stems, buses, vocals and full mixes.
Why put a high-pass filter on the sidechain? Low frequencies carry the most energy, so a kick drum will trigger far more gain reduction than its perceptual importance warrants, ducking the entire mix. Filtering the detector's low end lets the compressor respond to the musical content instead.
Does it work in Mid/Side? Yes, with fully independent controls per channel, including separate dry/wet and sidechain filtering.
