Your Mix Sounds Amateur (And It's Not Your EQ)
Quick answer: EQ is subtractive and additive at the same time, but it can only ever amplify or attenuate energy that already exists in the signal. If a vocal has no 14 kHz content, boosting 14 kHz gives you 14 kHz of noise. Professional records sound expensive because engineers generate the missing content: harmonics, transient energy, phase-corrected air, saturation. That's a different category of processing, and it's why your EQ curve keeps failing you.
There is a world of difference between a drummer hitting a kick in a room and the kick on a finished Coldplay record. Both were real. One got processed by someone who knew that adding low end and adding punch are two entirely different operations.
The technique gap, in one sentence
Pros don't reach for one plugin. They reach for a chain: a compressor for density, an exciter for presence, a saturator for grit, a transient designer for attack, a phase rotator for the top end. Each with its own gain staging, its own latency, its own learning curve.
Setting that up takes fifteen minutes. Doing it on forty tracks takes an afternoon you don't have.

What the four bands actually do
Under the hood: compressors, exciters, enhancers, saturations, transient designers, phase rotations, and proprietary processes, carefully tuned so you never have to think about them.
LOW: Thick / Punch
Thick adds girth and fat. It's the default; start there. Punch adds transient energy so the source stays articulate even when you're piling on bottom end.
The move: weak kick recorded with one mic in a bad room? Raise LOW on Thick until it has body. If the attack disappears, switch to Punch. Two clicks.
MEDIUM: Warm / Broad
The band that thickens without muddying, the hardest trick in mixing. Warm is narrower in scope; use it when Broad is too much for the material. Synth basses, electronic kicks, and baritone vocals almost always want Warm.
HIGH: Shine / Excite
Shine enhances harmonics that are already present. Excite generates harmonics where there aren't enough.
This is the distinction that separates a boost from an enhancement. A dull acoustic guitar has nothing up there to boost. Excite manufactures it. That's why your EQ never worked.
AIR: Yin / Yang
The band that brings out the sun.
The very top of the spectrum is brutally phase-sensitive, so the Air band ships with two phase-relationship variants. Try both. Every single time. One will sit noticeably better than the other on any given source. The engineers who wrote the manual were blunt about it: don't be lazy, flip the switch.

The jog wheel: the control that shouldn't work but does
You've dialed the perfect balance across four bands. It's 15% too much.
Now what? Reach for four faders and try to move them proportionally by ear?
The jog wheel is a master VCA for the Sugar bands. It scales all four (or all eight in M/S mode) at once, without touching how much dry signal is passing through. Find the shape, then find the amount. Two separate decisions, cleanly separated.
Sugar processes in parallel. The dry signal is always present, and each band fader is its own dry/wet control. That's why there's no mix knob. It's not a processor. It's an adding machine.
Three saturations, ranked mild to obnoxious
- DRIVE: brings out harmonics without destroying the signal. Try it on full mixes, vocals, slick 808s, and any source that feels too clean, too real, too uninspiring.
- DISTORT: one step beyond. Aggression. Bite on anything dull enough to survive audible grit. And yes: it's legal on a drum bus.
- CRUSH: not polite in any way. You'll know when you need it.
The saturation section is post-everything, pre-output fader, with gain staging engineered per-algorithm to hold unity gain regardless of how hard you push.
Linear phase, because this touches your master
The four band crossovers and the high/low-pass filters are linear phase by default. No hollow midrange when you push bands. No disappearing bass. Safe on submixes, mix buses, masters, parallel chains, and multi-miked drum kits where phase correlation is life or death.
It costs latency and CPU. It's worth it. Turn it off in preferences if you need low-latency tracking.
The filters exist for a specific reason: Sugar's LOW and MEDIUM bands generate an enormous amount of energy. The high-pass (-12 or -48 dB/oct) lets you sweep away the sub-rumble you didn't ask for, so you can push the band as far as it wants to go without detonating your mix bus. Steep mode is there for when you've been greedy.
Two buttons that will teach you more than any tutorial
FX Only solos the Sugar process. Mutes the dry signal entirely. You hear, in isolation, exactly what you're adding. Combine it with the individual band bypasses and you will understand harmonic enhancement in about four minutes.
Level Management watches your band faders and compensates the output fader in real time. It is not auto-gain, and that's mathematically impossible with these processes. Think of it as an assistant who understands you only have one mouse. Because loudness fools everybody, and A/B-ing at matched level is the only honest comparison there is.
Bypass, meanwhile, is true bypass, and deliberately does not bypass the input and output faders, so your level match survives the comparison.

FAQ
What's the difference between an exciter and an EQ? An EQ changes the level of frequencies already present in the signal. An exciter generates new harmonic content (typically related to the fundamentals in the source), creating energy where none existed. On a dull source, EQ raises noise; an exciter creates presence.
Can I use Sugar on a master? Yes. The band crossovers and filters are linear phase by default, specifically so the plugin is mastering-grade. Mid/Side mode splits every band into separate M and S faders, very useful for rescuing a thin kick inside an otherwise good mix.
Which band do I start with? Whichever one describes what's missing. Weak bottom → LOW/Thick. Muddy but thin → MEDIUM/Warm. Buried in the mix → HIGH/Excite. Dull, closed, lifeless top → AIR (try both Yin and Yang).
Does Sugar replace my EQ? No. It does the thing your EQ structurally cannot do. Use both.
