Your Delay Is Ruining Your Mix (And You Can't Hear It Yet)
Quick answer: Delay doesn't muddy a mix. Uncontrolled delay dynamics muddy a mix. The repeats are loudest exactly when the source is loudest: the chorus, the hook, the moment everything else is already fighting for space. Then in the quiet passages, where the delay could actually be beautiful, it's buried. The fix isn't less delay or a shorter feedback time. It's ducking, gating, and dynamic control on both the send and the return.
Almost no delay plugin gives you that. Which is why almost every amateur mix has the same smeared low-mid haze around the vocal.
The three ways delay destroys a mix
1. It fills the gaps you fought to create. You EQ'd a pocket for the vocal. You automated the guitars down. Then a quarter-note delay drops eight repeats into that exact hole.
2. It competes with the dry signal. Repeat #1 lands while the singer is still holding the previous word. Now you have two vocals at similar level, slightly out of phase, in the same frequency range. Congratulations: comb filtering.
3. It carries frequencies it has no business carrying. Full-range repeats bring low-mids and sibilance back into the mix, over and over, at 40% wet.
None of these is a delay problem. All three are dynamics problems.
The fix: control the delay like a bus, not an effect
Ducking turns the delay down while the source is playing, and lets it bloom the instant the source stops. The repeats land in the gaps, where they belong, where they sound intentional, where every record you love puts them.
Gating stops the delay from feeding on room tone, breaths, headphone bleed and low-level noise. Only the loud material triggers repeats.

Repeat mode: the feature that isn't a feedback loop
Every delay you own works one way: output feeds back into the delay line, repeats decay exponentially, you control the decay rate. That's Feedback mode. It's fine.
Repeat mode is programmable. You draw the pattern. Three repeats at descending levels, panned hard left, hard right, then center? Done. A single repeat 1/16 late with the pitch dropped? Done. Rhythmic patterns that no feedback loop could ever produce, because feedback loops are mathematically constrained to decay curves.
Add Dual mode (two independent delay lines running simultaneously) and Spread, which modulates left and right delay times independently, and you're building stereo architecture, not slapping an effect on a track.
Groove shifts the entire delay timing forward or backward against the grid. Push it late and the delay drags. Pull it early and it lifts. This is where delays start to feel human.
